Gaze upon these good dogs at the 2020 National Dog Show

The National Dog Show was a much smaller affair than usual this year. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, fewer than 600 dogs competed for the honour of top dog — down from almost 2000 in 2019 . There were no spectators either, with only officials, handlers, security personnel and NBC's film crew were allowed inside the Greater Philadelphia Expo Center. But the dog show must go on, and the Kennel Club of Philadelphia made the best of a rough situation. In the absence of living spectators, the stadium's seats were instead filled with cardboard cutouts of humans and dogs alike. Most were dogs though, with notable attendees including Captain Raymond Holt and Cheddar of Brooklyn Nine-Nine fame. Read more... Match-3 games are playable spam, but they soothe my anxious brain

Welcome to  No Shame November ! This week we're diving into the pop culture we love that society tells us we shouldn't. In NBC’s fantastic afterlife comedy The Good Place , chronic worrier Chidi Anagonye describes his anxious interior monologue as “the sound a fork makes in a garbage disposal.” That noise – grating, inescapable, wrong — is what my brain sounds like too. I have the superpowered combo of anxiety and ADHD, both of which work together to spin my racing thoughts into an intrusive tornado that almost never blows away.  One of the other symptoms of my ADHD is hyperfocus, an involuntary state of mind that kicks in when I’m totally engrossed in something. When I’m hyperfocused on a jigsaw puzzle, a book, a Wikipedia black hole, or anything else that grabs my attention, the rest of the world may as well not exist. I’ll miss notifications, forget to eat, and generally stay rooted in my spot of interest until I’m jolted away from it by something big enough to move my b...

iFixit teardown confirms Apple's M1 MacBooks are basically the same as their predecessors

It was only a matter of time before iFixit got its hands on Apple's M1-powered MacBook Pro and MacBook Air for its official teardown sessions . And, aside from a new processor, cooler, and slightly different battery, the new laptops remain almost identical to their predecessors (which sounds awfully familiar to the iPhone 12 lineup ).  Starting with the MacBook Air, its biggest change under the hood is that it's fanless. Apple replaced it with an aluminum heat spreader instead, which iFixit says requires less maintenance.  According to the report, there's a thick cold plate over the M1 processor which draws heat through conduction to the laptop's flatter and cooler side, allowing it to radiate away safely. Since there's no fan, it might take longer for the MacBook Air to cool off but by nixing heat pipes and a vapor chamber, the heat sink has "more mass to saturate with thermal energy."  Read more... Senators warn Facebook, Twitter at post-election hearing: ‘Change is going to come’

Another day, another Congressional hearing on big tech...right?  Not so fast. Tuesday’s hearing , which once again saw Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg and Twitter’s Jack Dorsey remotely take the hot seat, was a little bit different. What made this one unique? This hearing was the first time Congress got to grill Zuckerberg and Dorsey since the election. Republican lawmakers called for the Senate Judiciary Committee hearing, titled “Censorship, Suppression, and the 2020 Election,” as a result of actions taken by the social media platforms against a New York Post story concerning leaks from Joe Biden’s son’s laptop. The real story behind the Queen's intruder on Netflix's 'The Crown'

Season 4 of The Crown takes place over most of the 1980s, one of the royal's family's more eventful decades. Marriages, assassinations, wars, and the Thatcher years are crammed into just ten episodes, but the midpoint of the season takes a moment to reflect on one of the stranger incidents of the era — Michael Fagan's 1982 break-in to the Queen's bedroom.  The Crown uses Michael Fagan as a symbol of a British everyman’s frustration with the government under Margaret Thatcher and further weaves the story of his break-in into the season’s larger themes of Queen Elizabeth II’s enforced distance from her family and subjects. It presents Fagan as a bizarre antihero whose actions remind the Queen of how little she has in common with “ordinary” people and encourages her to temporarily reassess her role as a figurehead.  Read more...
