Coinbase says unmasking Satoshi Nakamoto might harm its business

Some things are best left a mystery — at least as far as Coinbase is concerned.  The San Francisco-based cryptocurrency exchange has been preparing to go public since last year , and in a Thursday prospectus filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) it listed a number of issues that could harm its business. Notably, one of those risk factors is the future identification of Satoshi Nakamoto.  For the unaware, Satoshi is the pseudonymous creator of Bitcoin. Satoshi, whose true identity has never been confirmed, published a 2008 white paper titled "Bitcoin: A Peer-to-Peer Electronic Cash System" and is believed to hold the private keys to around 1.1 million bitcoin. Over the years there have been various efforts to discover Satoshi's true identity, but as far as anyone can tell they have all come up short. Read more... Facebook updates Instagram's nudity policy after Oversight Board recommendation

A month after the fresh-faced Facebook Oversight Board published 17 recommendations for how the platform could improve its content moderation, Facebook has responded with a resounding “OK, but it depends.” One of the more significant changes Facebook will adopt relates to Instagram’s nudity policy , to clarify that "health-related nudity" is allowed. The Oversight Board, which is an independent entity that rules on knotty content cases across all of Facebook’s platforms, recommended that Facebook update Instagram’s community guidelines around adult nudity to clarify that some nudity — if it is health-related, photos of breastfeeding, giving birth, breast cancer awareness, gender confirmation surgery, or in an act of protest — is allowed on the platform. Facebook agreed. It will take a while for that to go into effect holistically, but Facebook says it'll provide progress updates. Read more... Mr. Potato Head rebrand celebrates same-sex parents

Finally, more inclusive potato family representation! But the change didn't come without a dollop of confusion and controversy. Beloved children's toy brand Mr. Potato Head is set to undergo a  gender neutral rebranding  this year, the Associated Press reported, in a move that recognizes same-sex parents and marks the importance of inclusivity when it come to gender identity. Social media posts initially claimed that that Mr. Potato Head as an individual toy would be no more in this new Potato Head world. Hasbro clarified that's not the case.  In Hasbro's official announcement of the rebrand, it explained it will drop the "Mr." from its official brand name. In addition to its current line that includes Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head, the brand will sell a new family play set featuring three genderless potato bodies (two large potatoes, one small potato, and an assortment of accessories) that children can design to look however they want, including same-sex fami...

Mars' 2 weird moons began as 1 large moon, study suggests

Mars may have had a single moon before something smashed into it, tearing it asunder into the two moons we see today. In a study published Monday in Nature , scientists explained how they used the orbital patterns of Phobos and Deimos along with seismic data from NASA's InSight mission to create a simulation of where their paths began, like a digital time machine. When they looked far enough back, it indicated the orbits once intersected, giving rise to the new smashed-moon theory. While many moons in our solar system are spherical bodies like our own moon, Phobos and Deimos are not, explained Amirhossein Bagheri, lead author on the study and a doctoral researcher at the Institute of Geophyics, ETH Zürich .  Read more... The multi-billion dollar USPS modernization looks like...a duck

The United States Postal Service is finally modernizing its fleet of delivery trucks, but the proposed vehicle design is a head scratcher.  It's no secret that the USPS is literally falling apart , and its current fleet of delivery vehicles is no exception. Its current trucks, which were purchased between 1987 and 1994, keep catching fire as they continue to deliver mail decades beyond what was supposed to be a 24-year life expectancy. Last July, Vice reported that more than 141,000 of these original trucks are still in service.  The USPS is at least updating its fleet with a multi-billion dollar modernization plan that involves revamping its delivery trucks with more modern ones over the next decade. On Tuesday, the USPS announced that it awarded a 10-year contract to Oshkosh Defense to "manufacture a new generation of U.S.-built postal delivery vehicles that will drive the most dramatic modernization of the USPS fleet in three decades."  Read more... The Lincoln Project imploded, and burned liberals who backed its anti-Trump viral videos

From the day The Lincoln Project launched in late 2019 as a group of high-profile Republicans determined to take down then-President Donald Trump, the super PAC positioned itself as a moral authority on the fate of the country.  "As Americans, we must stem the damage he and his followers are doing to the rule of law, the Constitution and the American character," the project's co-founders wrote in a New York Times op-ed. So when it recently became public that 21 men accused co-founder John Weaver of online sexual harassment, and that its leaders allegedly knew about some of those complaints as early as last March , The Lincoln Project swiftly lost its credibility .  Read more... Pierogi the puppy crashes live weather report and awwwwww

It may be cold out there, but thanks to Pierogi our hearts are warm.  As below-freezing temperatures continue to slam much of the country this week, FOX 5 DC's Bob Barnard took to the streets of Norther Virginia for some on-the-ground weather reporting. However the rather jovial live report (complete with Cancun Cruz jokes) was interrupted when an absolutely huggable puppy ran right across the street and toward Barnard.  Thankfully, Barnard was quick on his feet — picking up the pup and letting it lick his (masked) face repeatedly.  "Forget the people we talked to earlier, I want to get to know this dog," he said to his fellow reporters back in the newsroom.  Read more... How you can support the safety of Asian Americans with attacks on the rise

In addition to the trauma of the global pandemic, it's been a year of increased racist and violent rhetoric against Asian American communities across the country. After a series of horrific attacks around the turn of the new year in Oakland, California, and New York City 's Chinatown neighborhoods, internet users are trying to help #StopAsianHate by donating to community organizations, supporting victims, and sharing stories that are typically silenced.  Celebrities and multinational corporations — from actors like Daniel Dae Kim and media behemoths like Netflix and Paramount — have also contributed to the #StopAsianHate and #StopAAPIHate hashtags, sharing useful Twitter threads and encouraging community members and victims to report instances of racism and violence, which tend to be underreported.   Read more...
