This time, Pence wears mask as he tours Indiana plant

Vice President Mike Pence donned a face covering Thursday as he toured a General Motors/Ventec ventilator production facility in Indiana after coming under fire for failing to wear one earlier this week in violation of Mayo Clinic policy. Senate Democrat says Republican leader's plan to resume work puts lives in danger

A U.S. Senate Democrat on Wednesday accused Republican Majority Leader Mitch McConnell of endangering the lives of Senate staff if he brings them back to work next week without effective safeguards against coronavirus infection in place. Senator Chris Van Hollen, whose state of Maryland contains several suburbs of Washington where federal workers live, said he had written to McConnell to demand details of how staff will be protected when the Senate returns to session on Monday. "I am ready to see senators resume work in the Capitol, but without effective safeguards in place, Mitch McConnell is endangering the lives of the staff who work there – including many of my constituents – and undermining regional efforts to prevent the spread of the coronavirus," Van Hollen said in a statement. from Yahoo News - Latest News & Headlines https://ift.tt/2VLUyoG

US Navy ship sails through Chinese-claimed waters in South China Sea

A US Navy guided-missile destroyer sailed through waters near the Paracel islands in the South China Sea challenging China's claim to the area, the Navy said Wednesday. The USS Barry undertook the so-called "freedom of navigation operation" on Tuesday, a week after Beijing upped its claims to the region by designating an official administrative district for the islands. "Unlawful and sweeping maritime claims in the South China Sea pose an unprecedented threat to the freedom of the seas, including the freedoms of navigation and overflight and the right of innocent passage of all ships," it said. from Yahoo News - Latest News & Headlines https://ift.tt/3aMO1hF

Satellite images reveal Kim Jong-un may be at luxury family villa

New satellite images showing the recent movements of luxury boats by Kim Jong-un, the North Korean leader, have provided further indications that he may be ensconced in his seaside villa in Wonsan, on the country’s east coast. The location of the reclusive leader has been a mystery since his unprecedented no-show at April 15 events to mark the birthday of his late grandfather and North Korea’s founder, Kim Il Sung. His absence, for the first time since he took power in 2011, unleashed a torrent of speculation about his health conditions, with unverified and conflicting reports claiming he was both recuperating from cardiovascular surgery and in “grave danger.” On Tuesday, commercial satellite imagery obtained by North Korea-monitoring website NK PRO showed boats often used by Kim had made movements in patterns that suggested he or his entourage may be in the Wonsan area. “Extensive analysis shows that similar leisure boat movements at an exclusive villa in Wonsan and a nearby island ne...

Fourth stimulus bill may not be needed if states bounce back: White House

A fourth bill to provide stimulus to the U.S. economy may not be needed if states are able to successfully reopen their economies "relatively quickly," as some forecasters and equity markets expect, a White House economic adviser said on Thursday. "I think probably very soon, very shortly, we'll have a better idea about whether we need to extend the current existing things or move on to new ideas," presidential adviser Kevin Hassett told Fox News Channel. More than 30 million Americans have joined the unemployment benefit rolls over the past six weeks, and Hassett said the unemployment rate this month likely jumped to around 19% from 4.4% in March. from Yahoo News - Latest News & Headlines https://ift.tt/35l9gpW

Reddit VP: 'Ya, we f*cked up.'

Reddit botched the rollout of a new feature that could have endangered some vulnerable users — and now it is eating crow. On Wednesday, Reddit announced that it was initiating a limited rollout of a new group chat feature called "Start Chatting" that would allow subreddit members to speak directly with each other in chatrooms. It was originally positioned as a way for Redditors to connect with people during COVID-19 social distancing. The problem? Not only was there no way for communities to opt out of the feature, but moderators also would not be able to, well, moderate them. In the over 1,500 comments to the original announcement, many mods quickly pointed out that this made the chat function ripe for abuse by trolls. Read more... Trump orders meat processing plants to remain open

President Donald Trump took executive action Tuesday to order meat processing plants to stay open amid concerns over growing coronavirus cases and the impact on the nation's food supply. FDA reportedly plans to authorize emergency use of largely untested drug to treat coronavirus

The Food and Drug Administration will authorize the emergency use of the antiviral remdesivir on COVID-19 patients as soon as Wednesday, a senior administration official told The New York Times. Pharmaceutical company Gilead Sciences revealed promising study results involving remdesivir on Wednesday, but the FDA's reported move would still sidestep the usual testing required to authorize a drug's usage.Gilead said Wednesday that its own trial, as well one overseen by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, met its goals. Of the study's 397 severe COVID-19 patients, at least 50 percent of patients treated with a 5-day dosage of remdesivir improved and more than half were discharged from the hospital within two weeks. The overall mortality rate of the study was 7 percent, and relatively few patients developed bad side effects. But the study wasn't evaluated against a control group, and it's unclear if those recoveries were natural or if remdesivir a...

Ignorance, fear, whispers: North Korean defectors say contacts in the dark about Kim

Defectors from North Korea say many of their relatives and contacts were unaware of the international speculation over leader Kim Jong Un's health or were unwilling to discuss the issue in clandestine calls made from the South. Two defectors told Reuters their relatives in North Korea did not know that Kim has been missing from public view for almost two weeks, said they didn't want to discuss the issue, or abruptly hung up when the supreme leader was mentioned. Kim's health is a state secret in insular North Korea and speculation about him or his family can invite swift retribution. from Yahoo News - Latest News & Headlines https://ift.tt/2VHGPiE

Shipping tycoon defends Venezuela gas delivery amid shortage

A controversial shipping magnate supplying gasoline to his native Venezuela said he will do whatever it takes to prevent worsening fuel shortages from igniting a social explosion that he warns could be worse than anything caused by the coronavirus pandemic in the South American country. Wilmer Ruperti gave his first interview in years after The Associated Press reported earlier this month that his company, Maroil Trading Inc., was buying gasoline that most companies are refusing to sell to the bankrupt, heavily sanctioned socialist country. “This isn't about my business,” Ruperti told AP at his modernist hilltop mansion overlooking Caracas. from Yahoo News - Latest News & Headlines https://ift.tt/2KOCBze

How Tara Reade's allegations could bring down Joe Biden

Earlier this month, I wrote a column asking what Democrats should do about sexual assault allegations against Joe Biden, the party's presumptive nominee for president. My answer? Not much. The accusation made by Tara Reade, a former Biden staffer from his days in the Senate during the early 1990s, didn't strike me as especially convincing, so Democrats, I suggested, could move forward without much concern. Though toward the end of the column I included two caveats: If Reade offered further corroboration of her claims or if evidence emerged of a larger pattern of abusive actions toward women on Biden's part, that could well change my views of the matter.Just two weeks later, both of my conditions have been met.Last week we learned that Reade's mother called into the Larry King Show in 1993 to talk about how her daughter had quit working for a "prominent senator" after unspecified "problems" as a staffer. Then earlier this week Business Insider reporte...

It probably comes as a shock to no one that people are using Facebook, and its additional social media platforms, more than ever under lockdown due to the coronavirus.  During Wednesday's earnings call, the company announced its seen a huge spike in its monthly active users with a 10 percent year over year increase. TikTok surpasses 2 billion global downloads

Quarantine + addictive dance videos = app domination. TikTok has surpassed 2 billion downloads, mobile app analytics company Sensor Tower reported Wednesday. (April 29). The 315 million installs it gained in Q1 of 2020 alone also reportedly give it the title of "most downloads for any app ever in a quarter." Mashable has reached out to TikTok to confirm Sensor Tower's data, and will update this story if and when we hear back. Sensor Tower is attributing the burst in downloads at least in part to the global pandemic. While it notes that TikTok has been consistently on the rise, Sensor Tower views the spike in downloads over the last two months as a consequence of people being confined to their homes and, frankly, bored.  Read more... Elon Musk calls stay-at-home order ‘fascist’ during Tesla earnings call

Elon Musk had even more to say about social distancing measures after he rage-tweeted on the topic Wednesday morning. Tesla's first quarter earnings call Wednesday afternoon (April 29) started with prepared marks from CEO Elon Musk that noticeably and awkwardly avoided mentioning coronavirus or anything about the pandemic.  But as the call progressed, Musk's true feelings about shelter-in-place requirements, like those in the Bay Area that are keeping his Fremont, California car plant shut down until at least June, surfaced. He could barely contain himself as he used profanity to describe his thoughts on shelter-in-place efforts to curb the spread of COVID-19.  Read more... New website offers quick mental health support during COVID-19

There's no shortage of local, state, and national helplines that offer support to people during emotional or mental health crises. The problem is that they've not been easily accessible in one searchable database, which means it might take callers or texters reaching out for help longer to find the resources they need.  A new website launched Tuesday by the Pandemic Crisis Services Coalition aims to change that. Its goal is to make mental health support a click away for people who are struggling with their emotional and mental wellbeing during the coronavirus pandemic.  "The ability to access mental health crisis services is critical at this time, yet COVID-19 is impacting the typical ways people receive help in a crisis," Travis Atkinson, president of the Crisis Residential Association and co-chair of the American Association of Suicidology’s Crisis Services Committee, said in a statement.   Read more... 'Jeopardy!' contestant invokes Chaka Khan's name in a hilariously wrong answer

A Jeopardy! contestant's gaffe is going viral for being so hilariously off the mark.  During Monday night's episode, a contestant chose a category labeled "The Zulus," an ethnic group from southern Africa. Host Alex Trebek read the prompt: "Here, as on each Sept. 24, Zulus celebrate a holiday that was named in honor of this warrior leader of the early 1800s."  The answer is, "Who is Shaka Zulu?" But instead of answering with the correct historical figure — that is, the warrior king known for his military tactics — contestant Sarah Jett Rayburn blurted out "Who is Chaka Khan?"  Always professional, Trebek managed to avoid laughing at the answer. But Twitter user XOrlandoXXX, whose video of the exchange went viral on Monday, couldn't hold back snickering.  Read more... There's an excellent new Michael Jordan meme thanks to ESPN's 'The Last Dance'

For the longest time, Crying Jordan was the un-killable meme . In the end, while it took longer, the meme faded just like any other.  But now we've been blessed with another great Michael Jordan-related meme, thanks to the 10-part ESPN/Netflix documentary "The Last Dance." The meme relies on Jordan making an incredulous face at a tablet. During the scene in the doc, Jordan is preparing to watch his long-hated rival Isiah Thomas try to explain a slight from decades earlier. But the internet quickly reinvented the image. Even fellow NBA legend Dwyane Wade quickly spotted that MJ was about to be a meme again. It was just too good. Read more... Sketchy YouTube videos will now come with fact checks

Anyone who has ever fallen into a YouTube conspiracy theory wormhole just got thrown a lifeline. YouTube announced Tuesday that it would begin rolling out "fact check panels" in the U.S. What does that mean? The company said in a blog post that if a user searches a topic on YouTube that has been debunked by fact checkers, a shaded box will appear at the top of the query results that identifies the claim and rates it as "false." The feature rolled out in India and Brazil last year, but the post said that the spread of coronavirus misinformation helped show the urgent need for this feature to become more widespread.  Read more... Watch Tesla drivers test out new Autopilot road signs update

Tesla's inching closer to the self-driving dream with its latest Autopilot update. Last week, Tesla quietly dropped some new abilities to its semi-autonomous driving system called Autopilot . The update gives all Tesla cars with Autopilot activated the option to stop at street lights and stop signs without the driver having to touch the brakes. Stop signs, streetlight symbols, and other road signage information are also now more visible on the screen.  But the new Traffic Light and Stop Sign Control feature, which is still in beta, still involves a lot of active participation from the driver. After stopping at a red light or stop sign, the driver has to press on the accelerator or gear stalk for the car to continue straight ahead. (The car will stay in Autopilot mode, whereas before if you grabbed the wheel or touched any pedals or levers, you were booted off the system.) The driver can also choose to disable Autopilot and takeover the wheel, so if you need to make a left tur...

Let's all learn from the 'GMA' reporter who went on air without pants

When working from home it's extremely tempting to wear comfortable clothes 24/7. Unlike that stiff Los Angeles Times op-ed , we are pro-sweats and pajamas all day, but one Good Morning America reporter's unfortunate pants-less video chat should serve as a cautionary tale to anyone living in loungewear. Since many people have to call into virtual video meetings throughout the week, dressing the top half of your body in professional attire and wearing whatever pants you want has become a common quarantine practice. But when Will Reeve , an ABC reporter, who called into GMA on Tuesday, tried to wear half a suit on the air , things didn't go very well. Read more...
